On Wednesday, June 15th the National Museum of Mexican Art celebrated six extraordinary women who embody the formidable legacy of Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, Latin America's 18th century feminist icon. These women, like Sor Juana, are trailblazers and have greatly impacted the communities they have served for the better.
We would like to acknowledge, Tracy Baim (Publisher of the Chicago Reader and founder of Windy City Media Group), Neusa Gaytan (Senior VP of Programs at Mujeres Latinas en Acción), Maricela García (Chief Executive Officer at GADS Hill Center), Minerva García Sánchez (Superintendent of Schools at DeKalb CUSD 428 School District), Jackie Taylor (Founder & CEO, Black Ensemble Theater), and our very own Co-Founder and Executive Director, Myrna Salazar.
We at CLATA have the privilege every day to see Myrna Salazar fight for equitable representation and compensation for Latino theater artists, primarily in Chicago, where Latinos make 1/3rd of the population but are often left out of the spotlight of Chicago stages. With her years of lived experiences bolstering her unwavering dedication, Myrna is an inspiration to many, especially, us, her team. Congratulations, Myrna, on this well deserved award.
